From a tiny seed planted by Head Start children grew a giant Sunflower over 8 feet tall! The children had a wonderful time talking about the Sunflower’s: colors, size, height and how incredibly heavy it was!  They are all looking forward to next spring when they will have a chance again to plant their seeds!

Head Start: East Room Tree Study

November 18, 2015

The East room children are studying trees. This fall, so much is happening with trees outside. We have explored trees: how they grow from the ground, how they can be different sizes and how they lose leaves as it gets colder.

We have explored key vocabulary focused on trees including: roots, bark, trunk, branches and of course, leaves.

We invite you to look at the trees we made using sticks from outside!

Re-imagining Turkeys: School Age Sunshines Group

November 16, 2015
The Sunshines Group of the Settlement School Age program at Rowe focused on re-imagining turkeys: In one art activity, the Sunshines used their imagination to draw turkeys on paper using markers and feathers. Some children used their hands to trace their fingers as an outline, whereas other children opted to freehand their turkey.

The Sunshines also participated in another art activity in which they used feathers, googly eyes and pine cones to create turkeys.

Food Experience; Trying Different Kinds of Apples with Ms Anne’s East Room

November 11, 2015
Recently, Head Start East participated in a mini-study focused on apples. We used our senses to explore four varieties of the sweet fruit. We used our eyes to look at the different colors apples; red, yellow green. We used our hands to touch them and our noses to smell them. At the end of the study, we tasted the apples and voted for our favorite. We created a bar graph and the winner was Red Delicious!
