January 17, 2012

On January 16, 2012, AmeriCorps Project YES!, organized a literacy fair for the West Town community in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. It was the fifth annual Project YES! literacy fair and served youth from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade and their families. It included a storytelling performance from Adventure Stage Chicago, a visit from the Story Bus, hands on literacy activities, and literacy based games. Over 700 books were collected for this event and 225 school supply goodie bags were put together. Each child was given two books and one goodie bag after visiting the stations of the fair. In addition, 10 lucky raffle winners walked away with some great prizes, including a 3G Kindle Touch. The literacy fair was a great success and really emphasized the importance of reading.

January 17, 2012

On Thursday January 12, 2012, The Whitely Head Start classroom utilized the scientific method by conducting an experiment on water displacement. They asked a question, how many marbles would it take to make the cup of water overflow? The constructed a hypothesis by estimating how many marbles they thought it would take. Then they performed  the experiment. They counted exactly how many marbles it took until the water flowed over the top of the cup and communicated their findings by writing it on a poster and displaying the results in the classroom.
